Miami, Florida – Inter Miami CF announced on Thursday that they have traded defender Christopher McVey to D.C. United. In exchange, Inter Miami received an international roster slot for 2024 and up to $100,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) contingent on McVey’s performance.

The trade marks the end of McVey’s time in Miami after making over 60 appearances across all competitions for the team. The 26-year-old joined Inter Miami ahead of the 2022 MLS season and immediately became a key player, starting every match that year.

While not known for his offensive prowess, tallying just one goal and one assist, McVey provided stability and reliability at the back for Miami. His consistency and durability were valued by the coaching staff as he helped guide the club’s defense.

Inter Miami Sporting Director and Chief Soccer Officer Chris Henderson acknowledged McVey’s contributions in a statement. “Chris has been a reliable, valued member of our squad since he joined the Club, playing every match in his first season and helping us make history in winning our first title last year. We’re thankful for his efforts at Inter Miami and wish him well in his future,” Henderson remarked.

The title Henderson referred to was the 2023 Leagues Cup that Inter Miami won in a thrilling penalty shootout against Liga MX side Club Leon. McVey featured in three matches during Miami’s Leagues Cup run, including the final at the iconic Rose Bowl.

While McVey departs, Inter Miami adds flexibility with the acquired international roster slot. The slot allows them to potentially sign an additional foreign player outside the allotted number for each MLS team.

The contingent GAM provides further roster budget relief if McVey meets certain criteria with D.C. United, such as number of appearances. GAM is frequently used in MLS for trades and acquiring players.

Inter Miami will be hoping the roster flexibility helps boost a team that narrowly missed the 2022 MLS Cup playoffs in their first two seasons. With star striker Gonzalo Higuain leading the attack, McVey’s steady presence in defense will be missed.

However, Inter Miami now forges ahead with reshaping the roster ahead of the 2024 MLS season. The trade of McVey signals the team’s willingness to make changes and build towards the club’s ultimate goal of becoming perennial MLS Cup contenders.
