The WNBA’s Chicago Sky landed two of the top prospects in the 2024 draft class – Angel Reese from LSU and Kamilla Cardoso from South Carolina. While the pair battled fiercely as rivals in the NCAA, Cardoso wants to make one thing clear – any perceived “beef” was simply competitive fire, not a personal grudge.
“We are a great duo. I’m going to tell you this once and one time only…Social media really be trying to messy. We played against each other, it’s competition…Outside of basketball, we cool,” Cardoso bluntly stated.
The Brazilian center’s comments refer to the heated matchups between Reese’s Tigers and Cardoso’s Gamecocks over the last couple seasons. The two elite posts frequently jawed at each other and had to be separated by coaches and officials after tangling up.
However, Cardoso insists that was simply the product of their intense drive to win, not any sort of deep-seated animosity. All that chippiness was left on the court.
“At the end of the day, it’s business and there aren’t any friendships on the opposing team,” she explained. “But once you come off that court, it’s all love and respect.”
Reese echoed those sentiments, making it clear there are no lingering issues as they become Sky teammates. “We were just two competitors who wanted to take each other’s heads off during those 40 minutes. But before and after, we’re cool.”
With that air cleared, the Sky’s prized rookie duo can focus on leading the franchise’s latest championship pursuit. Their interior dominance and competitiveness could make them a nightmare for WNBA rivals – unless of course you catch them at the right time before or after the game.
