The young WNBA season is just getting underway, but an intriguing rematch is already on the docket for Monday night. The Connecticut Sun (2-0) will visit the Indiana Fever (0-3) in Indianapolis, looking to double up on a team they beat handily less than a week ago.
When the Sun and Fever met in the season opener on May 14th, Connecticut cruised to a 92-71 victory behind a balanced attack. Five Sun players scored in double figures, led by veteran wing DeWanna Bonner’s 20 points. Do-it-all forward Alyssa Thomas filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, 13 assists and 7 rebounds.
For Indiana, rookie sensation Caitlin Clark had an up-and-down pro debut. The 3rd overall draft pick out of Iowa scored 20 points but also coughed up 10 turnovers against the swarming Sun defense. Clark will look to clean up the miscues while NaLyssa Smith aims to build on her 13 point, 8 rebound performance.
This rematch gives the young Fever a chance at quick redemption on their home floor of Gainbridge Fieldhouse. But they’ll need to figure out a way to slow down the undefeated Sun, who have opened the year with wins over Indiana and the Atlanta Dream.
WNBA Viewership Skyrocketing
While the Fever are off to a rough start, the WNBA as a whole is enjoying a massive viewership surge to begin the 2024 campaign. The Sun vs Fever opener was the most-watched WNBA game ever across ESPN platforms, drawing over 2.1 million viewers.
When combined with the Las Vegas Aces vs Phoenix Mercury nightcap, opening night averaged 1.28 million viewers – a staggering 192% increase from last year’s ESPN regular season average.
The WNBA has been steadily building momentum, fueled by an influx of marketable young stars like Clark and added broadcast exposure. Interest will surely be high again for this marquee early-season rematch in Indiana.
