The Chicago Sky have unexpectedly taken the WNBA by storm this season. Initially written off as a middling squad with rookie head coach Teresa Weatherspoon at the reins, they’ve swiftly silenced their detractors.
Sporting a stellar 2-1 record, the Sky recently stunned the New York Liberty 90-81 on the road. This handed the Liberty, previously 4-0, their inaugural blemish.
“Our mentality was lacking,” a disappointed Sandy Brondello, Liberty head coach, admitted.
“I warned them it’d be a rugged matchup because of Chicago’s relentless aggression. They gave us fits all night. We all have to own this.
“We’re not there yet. We need more grit, more tenacity, more resilience – qualities we sorely lacked tonight.”
Weatherspoon has molded the Sky into one of the league’s most resolute, defensive-minded outfits. Seamlessly integrating rookie phenom Angel Reese into the rotation has paid huge dividends, easing the youngster’s transition to the pros.
Reese Lauds Weatherspoon’s Guidance
Reese has flashed immense potential in her Chicago role and appears poised to soar even higher with experience. Reflecting on the team’s fast start, Reese could not heap enough praise on Weatherspoon.
“I adore my coach,” Reese gushed.
“The haters can kick rocks. She’s one of one, simple as that.”
