Chennedy Carter came off the bench to deliver a season-best 25 points, while rookie Angel Reese contributed 16 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals. This dynamic performance led the Chicago Sky to a 79-71 victory over the winless Washington Mystics on Thursday night.
With this win, Chicago (4-5) handed Washington its 10th consecutive defeat, marking the fourth longest losing streak at the start of a season in WNBA history.
The Mystics struggled in the second half, scoring only 27 points and committing 24 turnovers throughout the game.
Reese, who was ejected from her previous game on Tuesday night after a controversial second technical foul (which the league later rescinded), made a significant impact on Thursday. She executed a crucial steal and converted a layup while drawing a foul, giving Chicago a 60-54 lead with just 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Post-game, Reese shared an emotional moment with her former LSU coach, Kim Mulkey, who was present courtside.
Rookie Aaliyah Edwards set her season highs with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks for Washington. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough contributed 11 points, while Ariel Atkins added 10 points.
In the final moments of the fourth quarter, Isabelle Harrison scored a key basket, and Chicago capitalized on a stolen inbounds pass, leading to a layup by Carter and extending the lead to 72-66. Carter then scored another layup on a fast break, making it 74-66.
Harrison added 14 points and Marina Mabrey scored 10 for Chicago, which struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 1 of 14 three-pointers and shooting 38% overall.
Chicago had a rough start, shooting just 26% in the first quarter and trailing 21-15. However, the Sky opened the second quarter with a six-point run before Washington responded with an 8-0 run, establishing a 29-21 lead. The Mystics maintained their lead at halftime, 44-35.
