Angel Reese, continuing her competitive saga with Caitlin Clark, suggested that the Chicago Sky were their own worst enemies in their earlier defeat to the Indiana Fever. As she gears up for their rematch on Sunday, June 16, Reese is determined to turn the tables.
During the previous 71-70 loss, Reese was on the court when Chennedy Carter sparked controversy by striking Clark in an off-ball incident in the third quarter, drawing widespread criticism from basketball commentators.
Amidst the uproar, the Fever’s victory over the higher-ranked Sky in the Eastern Conference went somewhat unnoticed. With the Sky now in a slump, Reese is rallying her team for the upcoming clash.
“Obviously Sunday, learning from our mistakes from the first game,” Reese told CBS regarding the June 1 loss to the Fever. “I think we beat ourselves that first game, so just going back and reviewing the film, we can correct what went wrong.
“I believe it’s going to be another thrilling game. There’s going to be a lot of attention on it, which is fantastic for women’s basketball. Of course, we’re set to continue breaking viewership records, and that’s what truly matters.”
In the prior encounter with the Fever, Reese fell short of her usual performance, managing eight points and 13 rebounds over 30 minutes in a game that drew 1.53 million viewers.
The Sky’s dismal 16.7% shooting from the field and their lag in assists compared to the Fever highlighted how small missteps can lead to significant setbacks.
Unsurprisingly, the conversation shifted back to the physicality against Clark following Carter’s actions on June 1. Reese emphasized that physical contact is part of the sport and their desire to win.
“We’re all extremely competitive out there,” Reese remarked. “We all want to do whatever it takes to win.
“There’s so much talent on both teams, so being out there and enjoying the game to the fullest is crucial.
“I’m incredibly excited for my teammates and for the other team as well. Growing women’s basketball remains our top priority.”
