Indiana Fever sensation and rookie standout Caitlin Clark has sparked buzz with her tantalizing hint about joining the highly anticipated three-point contest at the 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend.
“Remains to be seen. We’ll see. I don’t know, I haven’t decided, I don’t know,” Clark teased on Friday regarding her participation, as reported by Chloe Peterson of the Indy Star. “I can’t give you guys every answer today.”
Clark’s stellar performance has already earned her a coveted spot on the Team WNBA All-Star roster, with the festivities set to unfold the weekend of July 20 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Clark, a fan favorite, garnered over 700,000 votes, leading all nominees and joining Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese as the only two rookies to make the All-Star rosters.
In a dazzling display last year, New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu shattered records by amassing 37 points, setting a new high for both the WNBA and NBA in the three-point competition. Ionescu’s prowess continued as she faced Golden State Warriors’ sharpshooter Stephen Curry in a thrilling one-on-one three-point duel in February.
Rumors have swirled about Clark’s potential involvement in a future three-point showdown with Ionescu and Curry. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported in April that Clark’s participation in such an event is “very likely.”
With an impressive season at Iowa, where she surpassed Curry’s single-season NCAA record with over 162 three-pointers, Clark emerges as a prime contender for the next three-point contest.
Currently, Clark is shooting a solid 33.7 percent from beyond the arc, leading all rookies with an average of 2.7 three-pointers per game over 21 games. This statistic places her fifth in the WNBA, trailing only All-Star counterparts Arike Ogunbowale, Kelsey Plum, Kayla McBride, Ionescu, and Diana Taurasi.
Should Clark decide to compete, she will face formidable rivals, including reigning champion Ionescu and league leader Ogunbowale, who is averaging 3.3 three-pointers per game.
Adding another layer of excitement, Clark’s Fever teammate, Kelsey Mitchell, who competed in the three-point contest in 2018 and 2023, is another strong candidate to watch as the WNBA assembles the lineup for the contest.
As the All-Star weekend approaches, all eyes will be on Caitlin Clark, eagerly awaiting her decision. Will she rise to the occasion and take on the best in the league? The stage is set, and fans are buzzing with anticipation for what promises to be an electrifying showcase of talent and sharpshooting prowess.
