There’s a serious buzz in the air about Kansas City, and for once, it’s not about BBQ or Patrick Mahomes’ legendary no-look passes. Nope, this time it’s about basketball. Women’s basketball, to be exact. The Super Bowl-winning Chiefs quarterback and his wife Brittany have their sights set on bringing a WNBA team to Kansas City. And just like that, fans are clamoring over the potential roster—with one name at the top: Caitlin Clark.
The rumors began swirling after ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported the Mahomes power couple is in talks with the WNBA, looking to bring some professional hoops to the heartland. And let’s be real: with Patrick’s resume of sports ownership, this would be no side hustle. The man’s already dipped his toe in Kansas City’s sports scene, owning stakes in the MLB’s Royals, the MLS’s Sporting Kansas City, and the NWSL’s Kansas City Current. Safe to say, he’s got KC’s back when it comes to bolstering the home team lineup.
But the real kicker? Fans are practically writing the script, imagining Iowa’s Caitlin Clark—who’s already making noise as the most thrilling player in women’s college basketball—stepping onto the hardwood in KC.
“I could 1000% see Caitlin playing there,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another fan, clearly ready to make this fantasy a reality, quipped, “Man, I was literally just thinking about a WNBA team in KC.” And who could blame them? With the “Caitlin Clark effect” sweeping through the college basketball scene, some fans are even speculating she might end up owning a team one day. Maybe one run by the Mahomes’ Kansas City WNBA franchise, naturally.
Kansas City Sports Commission CEO Kathy Nelson can see the vision too, saying, “I think that ownership group [the Mahomes and co.] works so well, it could certainly be the perfect ownership group for a future WNBA franchise.” Given the success of the Kansas City Current, the city’s NWSL team that Brittany Mahomes co-owns, it’s no wonder people are eager to bring a WNBA team into the fold. KC’s sports community is growing fast, and a women’s basketball team would be the cherry on top.
Of course, all of this is purely hypothetical for now, but the timing couldn’t be better. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has expressed her hope to see the league expand to 16 teams by 2028. With the Golden State Valkyries joining as the 13th team in 2025, Engelbert has her sights on cities like Toronto, Portland—and now, potentially Kansas City—to round out the expansion list.
Will Caitlin Clark actually end up wearing a Kansas City jersey someday? Only time will tell. But if the Mahomes’ passion and the fans’ enthusiasm are anything to go by, it might just be a matter of time before Kansas City is cheering on a brand-new team in a brand-new sport.
