Kansas City, MO – Move over, Chiefs Kingdom—Patrick and Brittany Mahomes are eyeing their next court conquest, but this time it’s of the hardwood variety. Rumor has it, Kansas City may soon be a proud participant in the WNBA’s expansion efforts, courtesy of the Mahomes’ seemingly unstoppable sports franchise empire.
Fresh off a historic 2024 WNBA season, the league is booming and in hot pursuit of new franchises to capture the hearts of a growing fanbase. After locking down San Francisco’s Golden State Valkyries for next season and announcing new teams in Portland and Toronto in 2026, the WNBA is clearly ready to extend its reach. And now, Kansas City—championed by none other than the Mahomeses—is making its pitch.
The power couple, who already hold stakes in the KC Royals (MLB), Sporting KC (MLS), and the NWSL’s KC Current, are reportedly in serious talks with the WNBA. “You didn’t think I’d stop with football, did you?” Patrick Mahomes said, allegedly winking, maybe nodding toward a future basketball dynasty for Kansas City. NFL insider Adam Schefter, always with the scoops, reported the Mahomes met with WNBA brass to discuss bringing the next expansion team to KC.
The move could be perfect timing for a city hungry to return to the basketball spotlight. Kansas City Sports Commission President Kathy Nelson and Mayor Quinton Lucas are pulling out all the stops to land a WNBA team. “We think Kansas City is an amazing opportunity for the league to consider,” Nelson said, because why settle for one pro sports title contender when you could have, well, all of them?
Of course, there’s no shortage of competition. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert hinted that other cities—Philadelphia, Denver, Nashville, and yes, Toronto and Portland—are also in contention. And it’s no small feat to bring a WNBA team into existence. Between securing a suitable arena, player housing, and a long-term vision, this isn’t a project for a fair-weather fan. But as the owners of multiple KC sports franchises, Patrick and Brittany Mahomes may already be all-in.
Kansas City, brace yourselves. The WNBA might just be coming to town with Mahomes and company leading the charge.
