KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is getting ambitious again – and not with just his next touchdown. This time, the Super Bowl champ has his eyes on a new goal: bringing a WNBA team to Kansas City. After all, if there’s a city that knows how to rally around a team, it’s KC, and Mahomes wants to make sure this crowd has a women’s basketball team to cheer for. It’s not just about adding another squad; it’s about adding one for the city that’s already famous for its sports-loving, stadium-packing fans.
Mahomes, who seems to be building quite the Kansas City sports empire (he’s already a part-owner of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current, the Royals, and Sporting KC), says a WNBA team would be the next big thing for the area. And really, who can blame him? Kansas City already has everything it takes to host professional basketball: a fully equipped T-Mobile Center, a fanbase with energy to spare, and Mahomes himself as the face of the movement.
“Look, Kansas City fans don’t need an excuse to fill a stadium – just ask any Chiefs fan,” Mahomes joked. “And with what the Current has built here, I think we’re ready for the next step. Kansas City loves sports, and if it involves cheering, chanting, and filling up seats, KC is here for it.”
The WNBA is already set to expand by three new teams over the next two seasons, including teams in Golden State, Portland, and Toronto, which would bring the league’s roster to 15. But Mahomes, determined as ever, has his sights on that coveted 16th spot, projected to be added by 2028. There’s some serious competition from other cities vying for that last team, like St. Louis and Philadelphia. But for Mahomes, it’s a no-brainer – Kansas City is the sports city he calls home, and he’s ready to prove why it deserves a WNBA team just as much as anyone else.
“Kansas City’s a place I call home, where I’ve built my life, and I know what sports mean to people here,” Mahomes explained. “I’ve got my hands full with the Chiefs, sure, but this community deserves to see women’s basketball thrive in their own backyard.”
Mahomes has also been vocal about his commitment to supporting women’s sports, inspired in part by his wife, Brittany, and the talented athletes he’s met along the way. A proud girl dad, he wants to set an example for his daughter and inspire future generations of women athletes. “When I think about life after football, yeah, maybe it involves chasing my kids around,” he chuckled. “But it also means continuing to be part of the sports world and making sure my daughter sees that she can follow her dreams too – whatever those may be.”
And if there’s one thing we know about Mahomes, it’s that when he sets his mind on something, he makes it happen. Just ask any Kansas City resident or Chiefs fan who’s seen him pull off miracles on the field. But now, he’s turning his determination toward the WNBA – because why should men’s sports have all the fun?
So here’s to hoping that by 2028, Kansas City fans will be cheering courtside, watching their very own WNBA team, thanks to the guy who’s as good at tossing sports dreams into reality as he is at tossing footballs into the end zone.
