LA Sparks guard and professional opinion-haver Lexie Brown—daughter of dunk contest legend Dee Brown—recently took to X (formerly known as Twitter) for a little venting session, but things didn’t exactly go as planned. After throwing what can only be described as a polite-but-pointed dig at Chicago Sky star Angel Reese, Brown deleted the post faster than a botched layup and locked her account.
It all started when Brown, reminiscing about her college days at Maryland, posted about how the school seemed to have developed a convenient case of amnesia regarding her contributions. Brown, who balled out for two seasons with the Terrapins, didn’t exactly hold back. “The way Maryland acts like I never played there is hilarious,” she wrote, undoubtedly while rolling her eyes hard enough to see the back of her brain.
Naturally, someone had to bring up Angel Reese, the Maryland-turned-LSU star who has since become a household name and championship winner. But Lexie wasn’t feeling the Reese comparison. Brown fired back with some serious side-eye: “She didn’t take them to back-to-back Final Fours. Or an undefeated conference season & championship. Respectfully.” The “respectfully” at the end is that perfect little chef’s kiss of shade.
But, of course, the internet being the internet, screenshots were snapped before Lexie could hit delete, and chaos ensued. After facing backlash for daring to critique the basketball darling, Brown quickly hit the eject button, making her X account private. “I’m locking my s**t up. I can’t stand people who don’t support me always having something to say. Leave me alone,” she ranted, which is pretty much social media’s way of saying, “You can’t sit with us!”
The irony of telling people to leave you alone while posting about it on a public platform was probably lost on Lexie. But hey, this is the same app where people post 20-tweet rants about their “private” thoughts, so who’s really keeping score?
In case you’re wondering, Brown’s college career at Maryland was no joke. She played a key role in leading the Terrapins to the NCAA Final Four as a freshman and racked up a list of accolades that would make most people’s LinkedIn pages blush. She then transferred to Duke, presumably to be closer to home and maybe further from Maryland’s selective memory.
Meanwhile, Angel Reese, who also did her two-year stint at Maryland, put up some impressive numbers herself before heading to LSU, where she grabbed headlines, trophies, and the hearts of fans—none of which, apparently, has won over Lexie Brown.
Fans were quick to accuse Brown of taking more shots at Reese than she does in an actual game. This, of course, didn’t sit well with Lexie, who has zero patience for what she called “haters.” In one of her last posts before going private, she let everyone know how she really felt: “Now if you’re an opp in here … You got issues. You can literally never see my tweets if you don’t want to.” It’s the classic social media move—block the noise, but leave a mic drop on the way out.
As for Brown’s 2024 WNBA season, it was a bit of a rollercoaster. Limited to just 16 games due to her diagnosis with Crohn’s Disease, she still managed to put up solid numbers—8.1 points, 3.3 assists, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. Not bad for someone navigating health challenges and the occasional social media flare-up.
In the end, whether she’s dishing assists on the court or dishing shade on X, one thing’s clear: Lexie Brown’s going to do it her way. Just maybe with the privacy settings turned on from now on.
