Legendary comedian and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno has filed court papers seeking conservatorship over his wife Mavis Leno’s estate, citing her ongoing struggle with dementia which has left her unable to manage her financial affairs.
The legal move aims to protect 77-year-old Mavis, who has been married to Jay for over four decades, by ensuring her wishes for her assets are carried out. It is the latest chapter in what has been a difficult few years health-wise for both Jay and Mavis.
Leno filed the petition in a Los Angeles court on January 26th, according to records obtained by E! News. The 73-year-old comic is seeking a “substituted judgment” that would essentially allow him to make financial and estate-planning decisions on Mavis’ behalf that she would have made herself if she was still mentally capable.
“Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” the court documents state, per NBC News. “As Mavis’s current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan, Leno has petitioned the Court to be appointed conservator of his wife’s estate for the sole purpose of filing a petition for substituted judgment on her behalf in order to ensure her desires concerning the disposition of her assets upon her death are realized.”
The former late night king has never publicly addressed his wife’s dementia struggles before now. He would often lovingly mention Mavis during his tenure hosting The Tonight Show on NBC from 1992 to 2009 and again from 2010 to 2014. She would also join him at red carpet events over the years, most recently in November 2022 for the 60th anniversary of the Improv comedy club in Hollywood.
According to the petition, Leno believes Mavis consents to him becoming the conservator of her estate. A follow-up hearing has been scheduled for April 9th to address the matter further.
A Difficult Few Years Health-Wise for the Lenos
The revelation of Mavis’ deteriorating condition comes during a turbulent period health-wise for both her and Jay.
In November 2022, Jay was seriously burned in a fire that erupted while he was working on one of his prized vintage cars, a 1907 White Steam Car, in his garage. The blaze started when gas leaked from a fuel line he was trying to fix. Leno suffered burns to his face, hands and arms, requiring skin grafts and cosmetic surgery.
Just two months later in January 2023, the comedian was involved in a motorcycle crash that left him with a broken collarbone, two fractured ribs, and two broken kneecaps.
Leno underwent reconstructive surgeries on his face and has frankly discussed the long road to recovery. In March 2023 he told fellow comedians Dana Carvey and David Spade on their podcast that he got “an all-new face” and a “brand-new ear” from the procedures.
The back-to-back health crises have taken their toll on the Lenos, who had previously kept such a low profile on personal matters for all their years in the limelight.
Jay and Mavis: A Long-Lasting Love Story
Jay Leno and Mavis Nicholson were married on November 30, 1980, at the height of his early success as a stand-up comic. Though Leno was already a workaholic focused on his career, he made time for romance and a wedding.
Mavis, born in 1945 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, had been previously married to Karl Nichols and worked as a secretary. Drawn together by a shared passion for motorcycles, Mavis and Jay found love despite their contrasting personalities. She was laid-back where he was driven and ambitious.

While Jay was the public face cracking jokes and interviewing countless celebrities, Mavis chose to avoid the spotlight. She would send him off to work each night with a kiss on the cheek. He called her his “favorite person in the world.”
During Jay’s tenure on The Tonight Show, Mavis only appeared on camera with her husband three times over the course of 21 years. But her influence was profound. Jay would credit her with pushing him to pursue his dream job of hosting Tonight when the opportunity arose.
The couple never had children, forming a family of two both at home and on the road with Jay’s hectic stand-up schedule. Mavis was a constant companion, often going on tour with him.
