Charge Up Faster: Ford EVs Now Compatible with Tesla Superchargers (Here’s What You Need to Know)

In a game-changing move for electric vehicle owners, Ford has announced that its EV models can now access Tesla’s vast Supercharger network. This unprecedented compatibility gives Ford drivers access to thousands of fast charging stations across the country.

With over 15,000 Supercharger stations nationwide, Tesla operates the largest and most reliable fast charging network in the US. Until now, this network was exclusively limited to Tesla vehicles. Ford’s new compatibility opens up a world of possibilities for its EV owners.

Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting development:

How Does It Work?

Ford is providing a special Ford Charge Station Pro Adapter that allows its EVs to connect to Tesla’s proprietary charging plug.

Ford EV owners can request one free adapter per vehicle through the Ford website. Additional adapters can be purchased later for $230.

Once connected, the Ford vehicle can charge on any Tesla Supercharger just like a Tesla. The charging speed and cost will be similar too.

FordPass App Provides Access

To locate nearby Supercharger stations, Ford owners can use the FordPass smartphone app or the in-car navigation system, which will now display Supercharger sites.

The FordPass app synchronizes all billing so Tesla charging costs are automatically applied to the Ford owner’s account. No separate payment or membership is required.

The app also shows which Supercharger stalls are currently vacant, making it easy to find an open charger.

Fast Charging Made Easier

Tesla’s Supercharger network provides universal fast charging for EVs, with power levels up to 250kW. This enables rapid charging to 80% in under 40 minutes.

For Ford owners faced with long trips, access to Superchargers along highways makes electric travel far more convenient.

Previously, Ford EV drivers had to rely on a scattered mix of third-party fast charging stations. The Tesla network offers vastly more locations and reliability.

Better Route Planning in the Works

In the future, Ford says Tesla station data will be integrated into various route planning apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Ford’s own navigation system.

This will allow Ford EV owners to pre-plan trips and stops at Supercharger locations for optimal charging along the way.

Early Adapter Supply Limited

With over 70,000 Ford EVs already on the road, demand for the new adapters is expected to be high.

Ford says adapter supply will be limited initially as production ramps up. The company is prioritizing distribution to existing Ford EV owners before making additional stock available.

Unlimited Potential for the Future

This move marks a major milestone in EV charging compatibility. In the past, proprietary networks and plugs limited where EVs could charge quickly.

Thanks to Ford’s arrangement with Tesla, those barriers are dissolving. All EV owners stand to benefit from shared fast charging infrastructure.

As more automakers collaborate to expand public charging access, EVs become more appealing and practical for everyday use. This integration helps the EV segment mature and go mainstream.

In the future, a universal fast charging network accessible by all brands of electric vehicles could be a reality. For now, Ford drivers get to be the first to tap into Tesla’s leading Supercharger network.
