The long-awaited “Beetlejuice” sequel has risen from the grave. In a new trailer released Thursday, Tim Burton reanimates his 1988 supernatural comedy hit with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” reuniting stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.
Set decades after the original film, the sequel follows a now-grown Lydia Deetz (Ryder) who returns to her childhood home in Winter River with teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) after a family tragedy. As they settle back into the morbid mansion, strange occurrences hint at the return of the rambunctious bio-exorcist Betelgeuse (Keaton).
The two-minute teaser opens with Lydia gazing solemnly at a miniature model of the town, when suddenly it bursts to life with Betelgeuse cackling and hurling insults. “I knew that fungus would revive eventually,” Lydia remarks dryly. Astrid meanwhile discovers a cryptic message beckoning “Beetlejuice” as she explores the house’s secrets.
While light on plot details, the preview tantalizingly sets up a new haunting adventure blending Burton’s iconic gothic-comic visuals with a fresh generational dynamic. Fans have been clamoring for this follow-up for over 30 years, after the original’s cult success.
Burton has spoken about making a sequel with Keaton and Ryder since the early 2010s. “The movie is a cult classic and for good reason,” Ortega said. “We’re bringing it back in the best way possible with the original creepy team.”
The trailer’s release builds hype for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” ahead of its September 6th theatrical debut. With its perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation, the supernatural saga looks poised to put some groovy gravitational forces on the box office.
