LONDON – After months of speculation about her whereabouts following abdominal surgery, Catherine, Princess of Wales, is gradually resuming her charity work from home, according to Kensington Palace officials.
The Princess, better known as Kate Middleton before her 2011 marriage to Prince William, has reportedly been receiving updates and contributing to her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood initiative while recovering at home. The high-profile campaign aims to highlight the crucial importance of the early years of childhood for lifelong development and wellbeing.
“The Princess of Wales has been working from home as she continues her recovery and has been kept updated on the overwhelmingly positive results from her landmark children’s centre research study,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson told The Telegraph newspaper.
The long-awaited study, personally commissioned by the Princess, surveyed resources and provisions for young children across Britain and is expected to shape new policies and investments in early years services nationwide when publicly released soon.
However, Kate’s extended absence from public duties since undergoing a medical procedure in January has fueled rampant rumours and conspiracy theories about the state of her health and even the condition of her marriage to the heir to the throne.
Matters were not helped by an incident earlier this month when an official social media account run by Kensington Palace staff apologized for sharing a “doctored” photo of Kate for Mother’s Day, claiming an unnamed “amateur photographer” had digitally edited the image before posting it.
The Royal Family was then forced to confirm that a Getty Images photo provided to media outlets purporting to show a recent public appearance by Kate had also been “digitally enhanced” by unknown parties.
On Wednesday, London’s prestigious private clinic where the 41-year-old Princess underwent her operation reportedly launched an investigation after up to three individuals were suspected of improperly accessing her medical records in a data breach.
“We take enormous pride in the outstanding care and discretion we aim to deliver for all our patients,” said the clinic’s chief executive Al Russell. “There is no place at our hospital for those who intentionally breach the trust of any of our patients or colleagues.”
Despite the furor, fresh photos and videos emerged over the weekend appearing to capture Kate on a casual shopping trip near her Windsor home, providing reassurance to fans about her wellbeing if also prompting more scrutiny over the images’ authenticity.
Amid such intense media glare, the Princess is likely finding the privacy of an at-home work environment preferable as she eases back into her East London philanthropic role while the turmoil around digitally manipulated pictures of her eventually subsides.
