Lagos, Nigeria – On Tuesday January 17th, 2024, a massive explosion shook buildings and terrified residents in Oyo State, Nigeria. The blast, which occurred around 8 PM local time, was centered in the state’s capital city of Ibadan but was so powerful that it could be heard and felt over 80 miles away in the coastal megacity of Lagos.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion, which leveled several buildings and prompted frantic search and rescue efforts amid the rubble. Nigerian emergency management agencies dispatched crews to comb through the debris and look for any trapped or injured people.

“Relevant agencies are carrying out search and rescue operations at the scene of the incident,” the Oyo State government said in a statement. “Residents of the state are urged to remain calm as the Oyo State Government is on top of the situation.”

Terrified residents described feeling their homes shake violently and hearing a deafening boom as the blast ripped through the city. Many ran into the streets in a panic, fearing another explosion could come at any moment.

The explosion shattered the windows of our house – I thought it was an earthquake,” said local resident Adebowale Adeyemo. “Everyone in my neighborhood is really scared and confused about what caused this.”

Videos circulated on social media showing collapsed buildings and debris-strewn streets in Ibadan. The sheer scale of the destruction indicates the explosion was incredibly powerful.

Oyo State Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade said the blast was “uncommon” and unlike anything long-time residents had experienced before.

For now, search and rescue remains the top priority. With rubble blocking roads and complicating access, emergency responders are working diligently to reach any trapped people and provide aid to those injured by falling debris or broken glass.

Hospitals in Ibadan and neighboring cities are preparing for an influx of patients injured in the blast. Doctors urge those with serious injuries to come in immediately, while those with minor cuts should make way for urgent cases.

As the chaotic aftermath unfolds, the Nigerian public awaits answers on what caused the catastrophic explosion. Authorities have vowed a thorough investigation to determine if it was a tragic industrial accident, or possibly a deliberate criminal act.

Until a cause is established, unease and speculation will likely spread throughout Oyo State’s rattled population. Yet emergency crews continue working through the night, tirelessly combing the blast radius to find and rescue anyone still in need. Their bravery and dedication brings hope to those impacted by this shocking tragedy.
