San Diego, CA – A somber cloud hangs over the United States Marine Corps as the news of a tragic helicopter crash in the California mountains unfolds. On Tuesday night, a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter, with five Marines aboard, was reported overdue during a routine training flight from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
The last known contact with the aircraft was at approximately 11:30 pm, when a “ping” was reported to a Cal Fire dispatch center, providing a clue to its potential location. However, the harsh conditions posed by a historic storm that had brought record-setting rainfall and heavy snow to the region made the search and rescue efforts challenging for the teams involved.
