Exposed: Putin’s Alleged Attack on Navalny’s Supporter

HomeWARExposed: Putin's Alleged Attack on Navalny's Supporter

In a shocking act of violence, Leonid Volkov, a top strategist and close ally of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was viciously attacked near his home in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius on Tuesday. The brazen assault has drawn international condemnation and reignited concerns over the safety of those challenging the Kremlin’s authoritarian regime.

The Attack

According to Lithuanian police reports, an unknown assailant ambushed Volkov as he arrived at his Vilnius residence by car. In a chilling sequence of events, the attacker smashed one of the vehicle’s windows, sprayed tear gas directly into Volkov’s eyes, and proceeded to strike him repeatedly with a hammer.

The vicious blows left Volkov with a broken arm and severe bruising, rendering him unable to walk unassisted. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment but has since been released, though the road to recovery from his injuries will be long and arduous.

“Putin’s Henchmen” Blamed

In a defiant video message posted on the Telegram messaging app on Wednesday, a visibly battered but resolute Volkov accused Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “henchmen” of being behind the cowardly attack. With his arm bandaged and in a sling, the 43-year-old strategist vowed that the assault would not deter him or his colleagues from continuing their work.

“We will work, we will not give up,” Volkov declared, his voice unwavering. “It was a characteristic bandit greeting from Putin’s henchmen.”

His reference to Putin’s “henchmen” appeared to be a pointed jab at both the Russian president’s authoritarian tendencies and his past associations with the criminal underworld during his time as a deputy mayor of St. Petersburg in the 1990s, when the city was notorious for its high levels of organized crime.

International Outrage

News of the brazen attack on Volkov, who has been living in exile in Lithuania, has sparked outrage from human rights groups, Western governments, and the global community of Russian opposition activists.

Amnesty International swiftly condemned the assault, calling it “an appalling act of violence” and demanding that Lithuanian authorities conduct a “prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation” to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The U.S. State Department also weighed in, expressing “grave concern” over the attack and reiterating its support for “those advocating for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Russia.”

Navalny’s Legacy and the Russian Opposition

The assault on Volkov is the latest in a series of attacks and intimidation tactics targeting allies and supporters of Alexei Navalny, the charismatic opposition leader who became a thorn in the side of Putin’s regime before his tragic death in August 2020 after being poisoned with a nerve agent.

Despite Navalny’s passing, his anti-corruption movement and calls for democratic reforms in Russia have continued, spearheaded by dedicated activists like Volkov. The attack serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by those daring to challenge the Kremlin’s authoritarian grip on power.

Undeterred, Volkov and his colleagues have vowed to carry on Navalny’s mission, undaunted by the threats and violence perpetrated by Putin’s “henchmen.” As the Russian opposition movement perseveres in the face of adversity, the world watches with admiration and concern, bearing witness to the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice in a nation dominated by an increasingly repressive regime.
