Russian Plane Carrying Ukrainian Prisoners of War Crashes Near Border, Moscow Says

HomeWARRussian Plane Carrying Ukrainian Prisoners of War Crashes Near Border, Moscow Says

A Russian aircraft carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war crashed in heavy fog last night near the Russian-Ukrainian border, according to Russian officials. The plane was a Yakovlev Yak-42 jet carrying 45 Ukrainian POWs and 6 crew members when it went down around 9 pm local time outside the city of Ryazan.

Early reports indicate that at least 4 crew members have died. The fate of the 45 Ukrainian prisoners is currently unknown as recovery and rescue operations continue throughout the night. Images from the crash site show debris strewn across a snowy field next to a wooded area about 200 miles southeast of Moscow.

The flight had taken off from Yakovlevskoe Airport and was en route to Volgograd when it experienced technical issues only a few minutes into the flight. Russian authorities have opened an investigation into potential causes, which will include an analysis of flight and voice records as well as statements from air traffic control. Family members of the prisoners and crew are also being notified.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have been extraordinarily high since Russia invaded Crimea back in 2014. And this plane was in fact carrying Ukrainian prisoners that had been detained and held by Russian forces over the past several years of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

If the crash did result in the deaths of a large number of the Ukrainian prisoners aboard, it could further inflame political hostility between the two nations. However, given the unconfirmed details so far, caution should be exercised in speculating too much at these early stages.

Aviation safety experts say crashes right after takeoff are often tied to technical malfunctions, pilot error or weather hazards. In this case, dense fog may have contributed, but only a full investigation can determine that. For now, search and rescue crews face a difficult task continuing their work overnight in freezing conditions.

As more details emerge surrounding this tragic incident, our hope is that clarity and truth come to light. If mechanical failure or accidental pilot error proves to be the cause, may it serve to spur an even stronger commitment to safety across all civilian flights. And if darker motives are somehow uncovered, may that only further mobilize the global community toward peace between Russia and Ukraine in the long shadow of this ongoing conflict.
