Nashville, Tenn. – Grief’s raw, lacerating tentacles were laid bare on Friday as the shattered family of Riley Strain, the 22-year-old college student whose body was discovered in the Cumberland River that morning, made an emotionally charged plea through streams of tears: Cherish every moment with your loved ones.

“I just ask that you mommas out there hug your babies tight tonight, please,” Strain’s mother, Michelle Whiteid, told reporters, her voice fraught with anguish. She paused, seemingly unable to continue as the weight of the tragedy consumed her. After regaining her composure, she drove the point home in a haunting whisper: “Please for me, hug your babies tight tonight.”

Whiteid’s desperate appeal encapsulated the unimaginable torment the family has endured over the past two horrific weeks since Strain, a finance major at the University of Missouri, vanished without a trace during a fraternity trip to Nashville on March 8th. Answers finally came, but not the ones they prayed for, when a worker clearing debris spotted the 22-year-old’s body floating lifelessly in the murky river waters around 7:30 am on March 22nd.

United in grief while clad in green – Strain’s favorite color – the young man’s parents, Whiteid and her husband Chris, joined other loved ones at the podium, their hollow eyes and ashen faces bearing witness to the agonizing turmoil of their son’s mysterious disappearance and untimely death.

“It’s just unbelievable what they’ve done for us,” Strain’s father, Ryan Gilbert, said, his voice brimming with gratitude towards the Nashville authorities, the United Cajun Navy search team, and the community members who participated in the around-the-clock efforts to locate his child.

Those grueling search operations had kicked into high gear immediately after Strain was captured on surveillance video walking at a brisk, almost jogging pace away from the popular Luke Bryan-owned honky-tonk Luke’s 32 Bridge in the early morning hours of March 8th. The student had been kicked out of the establishment earlier that night, but had assured his fraternity brothers he would return to their hotel room just five blocks away. His phone’s desperate final ping came from near the riverbank around a mile from the bar.

In the days that followed, a panhandler claimed to have witnessed an “extremely drunk” Strain stumbling precariously close to the river’s edge. Two TikTok users scouring the area turned up the missing man’s bank card on the shoreline. And chilling police body camera footage showed officers had encountered the severely disoriented student near the riverbank that same night. The final text Strain sent to a romantic interest – the baffling words “Good lops” – only deepened the quagmire of strange clues surrounding his baffling disappearance.

But on Friday, any lingering shreds of hope for Strain’s safe return were severed as authorities confirmed the nightmarish news his family had been dreading. While no foul play is suspected at this point, an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the official cause and circumstances of his death.

At the press conference, the profound depth of the family’s anguish and appreciation for the community’s support were palpable. “To the people of Nashville, I can’t thank you enough for the support, the love, the encouragement that you’ve shown myself and my wife,” Strain’s stepfather Chris Whiteid proclaimed, his voice thick with emotion. “You don’t understand how much that meant to us in some of our darkest hours.”

Those same sentiments were echoed by Strain’s Delta Chi fraternity in a statement: “Our hearts go out to Riley’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time as we work to provide support and resources to all those affected by this tragedy.” The prestigious brotherhood had lost an “esteemed” member far too soon.

As dusk fell over Nashville, friends, loved ones and community members gathered on Gay Street – one of the final areas where the vibrant young man was caught on camera alive – to hold a solemn candlelight vigil honoring Strain’s memory and the family’s perseverance through unimaginable adversity.

Police Chief John Drake somberly confirmed to reporters that Strain’s body was identified through “identifying items” still adorning the remains, including the same shirt, watch and other personal effects he was last seen wearing when he inexplicably wandered off into the fateful Nashville night that stole his future.

The family’s plight has sent reverberations throughout the city and beyond, their heartbreaking words serving as a sobering wake-up call to the fragile, fleeting nature of life. As Michelle Whiteid implored through streams of tears, yearning to rewind time: “Please…hug your babies tight tonight.” For on this night, and from now until eternity’s end, all the Strain family can do is embrace Riley’s memory.
